About TaxEstimatePro
Welcome to TaxEstimatePro — your free, reliable online calculator for estimating freelance and self-employment taxes. We built this tool to help independent contractors, gig economy workers, freelancers, and 1099 professionals understand their tax obligations without paying for expensive software or accountants.
Our Mission
The U.S. tax system is designed around payroll withholding — but freelancers don't have employers withholding taxes from every check. This creates a huge information gap. Many self-employed workers dramatically underestimate what they owe, facing surprise tax bills and IRS penalties. Others over-withhold and lose money unnecessarily.
We believe everyone deserves clear, accurate tax information — regardless of employment status. Our mission is to:
- Simplify complex tax calculations into a single, easy-to-use tool.
- Educate freelancers about their tax responsibilities and rights.
- Empower independent workers to plan ahead and avoid costly surprises.
Why We Started
The freelance economy has exploded. Over 73 million Americans now work as freelancers, representing nearly 50% of the U.S. workforce. Millions more drive for rideshare companies, sell crafts online, or do consulting work — all classified as self-employed for tax purposes.
Yet most tax tools online were designed for W-2 employees or paid-for accounting software. There was a gaping hole in free, accessible, accurate self-employment tax estimation. That's what drove us to build TaxEstimatePro.
How Our Calculator Works
Our tax estimator uses the official 2026 federal tax brackets and self-employment tax rate of 15.3% to calculate your estimated tax liability. Here's what goes into the math:
- Self-Employment Tax: Computed on 92.35% of your net earnings at 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare).
- Federal Income Tax: Calculated using progressive 2026 tax brackets for your filing status (Single, Married, or Head of Household).
- State Income Tax: Based on approximate effective rates for all 50 states plus Washington D.C.
- Standard Deduction: Applied automatically (14,600 for single filers, 29,200 for married jointly in 2026).
You can also input your estimated business deductions (home office, health insurance, equipment, etc.) to get an even more accurate picture. The calculator instantly shows your total tax, effective rate, and recommended quarterly payment amounts.
